BACKGROUND
Alma Montemayor is a photographer in the Houston metroplex area who is inspired by this coastal city’s blend of cultures from all over the world, the multidimensional art that depicts the rich cultures of the South, Hispanic and Native American influences and the richness of the history of Texas.
Having been born in Mexico and as an immigrant to the United States when a very young child, Alma received all her education in the United States. Having experienced many adversities as a young Hispanic female growing up in a culture where race, diversity and ethnicity were a struggle, she always found a way to overcome all obstacles without letting opinions dissuade her from her goals to succeed.
After becoming an American Citizen at the age of 18 Alma began to see herself as a woman that would pioneer a movement for women by taking on the many challenges that some would see as an obstacle to success. Having witnessed many practices affecting women that in the late 1970’s and 1980’s were considered part of the work culture, she set herself to advocate for women’s rights in the workplace.
In early 1983, just over one year after the birth of her only son Eric, she joined the Civil Service workforce by accepting employment with the Immigration and Naturalization Service as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer. After a four month intensive training at the Federal Law Enforcement Center in Georgia Alma began a career that would transcend through 3 decades. Her career began at the International Bridge in Eagle Pass, Texas as a first line officer and in 1995 she was promoted to a Supervisory position at the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport. She transferred to Houston in 2006 where she served as Chief of Operations at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and retired from service in December 2013.
BECOMING A PHOTOGRAPHER
In 2014, after her retirement from Customs and Border Protection Alma found herself trying to define her new role as a retired person. After much consideration, she recognized that she had, for so many years, always had a camera in hand. Having a passion for taking pictures she decided to study photography. This new goal took her to a world that would open her eyes to all the possibilities in a field that had been her passion all along.
Having a son who is a highly talented artist in the Los Angeles, California area, Portland, Oregon, and Houston, Tx, Alma was inspired by his work to pursue her career in photography with a focus on Landscape and Macro photography. It wasn’t much longer after beginning her studies that she concluded that portraiture photography was also an area she would like to explore. She became inspired by the happy moments created by the personal connection made during a photo session and that this type of photography would create everlasting memories for her clients.
Alma promotes her photography as an Art. She has specialized in Macro Photography, Long Exposures using light, and artistic editing. You can usually find her with a camera in-hand ready to photograph a sunset, a bird in flight, a blooming flower, or a night skyline, or doing photo sessions with her clients in custom-tailored environments and locations.
